Petricor
The scent of summer rain on hot asphalt
Background
Petricor comes from the Greek: petra (stone) and ichor (the liquid flowing in the veins of the gods). It is the scientific name for the scent rain releases when it strikes dry, heated surfaces. In 1964 the Australian mineralogists Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas identified the responsible molecule: geosmin, produced by soil bacteria. In tropical Brazil this phenomenon is intensified by the intense heat of asphalt, humidity, and urban vegetation · producing a denser, warmer, and more penetrating version of petricor than anywhere else in the world.
